The Department of Natural Sciences presently employs 25 staff members, including 10 permanent scientific positions and 5 PhD students (http://uit.no). The department has large scientific collections, documenting more than 130 years of research in North Norway and other northern regions. The department includes a research group in taxonomy and biodiversity. The group focuses on diversity, phylogeography, and taxonomy of northern organism using molecular as well as traditional methods. The position is associated with the Norwegian-Swedish Research School in biosystematics, ForBio (cf. http://www.nhm.uio.no/english/research/forbio/). ForBio is a teaching and research initiative coordinated by the Natural History Museum (University of Oslo), Bergen Museum (University of Bergen), Tromsø University Museum (University of Tromsø) and the Museum of Natural History and Archaeology (Norwegian University of Science and Technology). ForBio is funded by the Norwegian Taxonomy Initiative and the Research Council of Norway. ForBio is part of the Ministry of Education and Research’s commitment to Norwegian university museums and the Ministry of Environment's commitment to increased knowledge of the Norwegian biodiversity. The position involves 50 % research and 50 % teaching and administration at the Research School. The successful candidate will work strategically and practically with the development of ForBio, and teach on theoretical and/or field courses offered through this research school. The development of the Research School will take place in cooperation with representatives of the other Norwegian university museums, and it is an advantage that the successful candidate has experience in developing and/or management of research and development projects. The successful applicant must be willing to engage herself/himself in the ongoing development of her/his discipline and the university as a whole. A doctoral degree is a prerequisite for appointment in the position of researcher. A Norwegian doctoral degree in systematics and taxonomy, alternatively from neighboring biological disciplines, or an equivalent foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree, is required for appointment. Post-doctoral research experience or research experience at this level is considered an advantage. Scientific publications, teaching and administrative experience will be emphasized. Knowledge of Scandinavian biodiversity is an advantage. The ability to work independently, reliability and good teamwork skills will be emphasized. Applicants must submit an outline of current issues for the research component of the position, including a realistic publishing schedule, in accordance with the section's research profile (max. 1 page). The research activity should be within taxonomy and systematic and preferable related to northern biota. A possibility for local research collaboration within taxonomy, phylogeography, biodiversity, and/or invasive species is an advantage. The assessment of applicants will partly be based on this outline. Applicants must have a good command of English and preferably Norwegian. Personal suitability for the position will be assessed. The remuneration for the position of researcher is in accordance with the State wage scale code 1109. A compulsory contribution of 2 % will be made to the State Pension Fund. Applications will be assessed by an expert committee. The main emphasis will be placed on assessment of the submitted scientific works and the proposal for the qualifying work. Emphasis will also be placed on pedagogical qualifications, experience from popularization/publication, administration and work related to disciplinary development.
